How my 7-year old son got a driver's license

A couple of weeks ago I was with my family in UP Town Center in Quezon City when a young lady in blue approached me. (Please continue reading, this is not at R18 post).

She said, “Do you have a child who is 4 to 8 years old?”

I was a bit caught off guard because I have never slept with anyone else other than my wife in the last 10 years. I looked at her face checking if she’s one of those I had flings with in college. She did not resemble anyone who I dated but she did look like my bestman Rommel with her short hair.

I replied, “I have a 7-year old son (and I have a birth certificate to prove it).”

“Do you want him to take a short driving course and a driver’s license today,” she smiled.

At first I thought this was just one of those mall-based marketing scheme that after if I agree, I’ll find myself surrendering my credit card and signing a contract that will insure my future ‘till I’m 99. But hey, there’s a line of kids with their parents in the mall’s activity area with the Volkswagen posted in every corner. Definitely legit.  So I got Charles enlisted and here's the fun learning journey he went through in around 30minutes:

Workshops and Presentations.
A representative from the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) educated the children how to become safe and responsible road users through two segments. First, there was a classroom-style lecture where kids were introduced to different road signs and what they mean.  Second, it was followed by a demo by the facilitator using toy cars in a miniature city map where the young ones literally learned the traffic rules while playing.

Junior Driving Course
Volkswagen set up a  50-meter junior driving course with VW push cars designed to simulate real life road situations. There were professional driving instructors who explained the importance of road safety visuals and correct passenger and pedestrian behaviors.

The young participants were also asked to complete a task of going to the a specific location in the driving course without violating any traffic rule. A junior driver’s license is given upon completion of the program.

If you are interested to introduce your kids (4-8 years old) on how to be a responsible driver, here’s the updated 2016 schedule of the Volkswagen Philippines' Child Safety Initiative (CSI) program.  This advocacy is FREE to interested individuals and is on first come, first served basis.

Hoodie You Want

What do you get when you cross Christmas breeze and monsoon rain? People wearing hoodies.

Well, that’s not actually a joke since hoodies are definitely one of the hottest things today. Well, they look cool, too.

A hoodie, also called a hooded sweatshirt or hoody, is a sweatshirt with a hood (apologies for the redundancies because I just want to make it really clear that my readers are thinking of the same hoddie that I have in mind).

But do you know the story behind the hoodie aside from the fact that it is a clothing with a muff sewn onto the lower front, a hood, and usually a drawstring to adjust the hood opening, and may have a vertical zipper down the center similar to a windbreaker style jacket?

Here are 7 Hoodie Trivia that you might find interesting:

1. The garment's style and form can be traced back to Medieval Europe when the normal clothing for monks included a long, decorative hood called a cowl attached to a tunic or robes, and a chaperon or hooded cape was very commonly worn by any outdoors worker.

2. The hooded sweatshirt was first produced in the United States starting in the 1930s by Champion in and marketed to laborers working who endured freezing temperatures while working in upstate areas.

3. The hoodie took off in the 1970s, with several factors contributing to its success. Hip hop culture developed in New York City around this time, and the hoodie's element of instant anonymity provided by the accessible hood.

4. Most critical to the hoodie's popularity during the 70's was its iconic appearance in the blockbuster boxing film Rocky.

5. By the 1990s, the hoodie had evolved into a symbol of isolation, a statement of academic spirit, and several fashion collections.  Young men, often skateboarders or surfers, sported the hoodie and spread the trend across the western United States. The rise of hoodies with university logos began around this time.

6. Hoodie Day was launched in May 2008 in New Zealand as part of an annual national Youth Week, a pro-youth initiative to challenge youth stereotypes.

7. In April 2013, the highly durable "10-Year Hoodie" was invented. The hooded sweatshirt is 100% cotton and the American manufacturers sourced yarns that are spun to become softer over time to ensure durability.

Now if you still don’t have a hoodie to wear during the cold weather, you have a chance to get one courtesy of 7-Eleven’s Health and Beauty promo HOODIE TIME, a rewards/ loyalty promotion using your 7-Eleven  Every Day! rewards card.  You can get a FREE limited edition hoodie (two designs to choose from) when you accumulate P1,000 worth of Personal Care product purchases.

FREE Paramore Concert Tickets

I first heard about Paramore from my former boss Ms. A who asked if I know where she can get a shirt with the band's name pinted on it. I told her to try the Top 40 booth at SM Megamall since it sells such clothing line. And I did saw a couple of Paramore shirts there.

From Wikipedia: Paramore is an American rock band that formed in Franklin, Tennessee in 2004. Members are Hayley Williams (lead vocals/keyboards), Josh Farro (lead guitar/backing vocals), Jeremy Davis (bass guitar), Zac Farro (drums), and Taylor York (rhythm guitar).

Paramore's song "Decode" was the lead single for the novel-based Twilight film. Another song called "I Caught Myself"[ is also featured on the film's soundtrack. "Decode" was released on October 1, 2008 on the Paramore Fan Club site as well as Stephenie Meyer's website. The band began shooting the video October 13 and it premiered on November 3. Hot Topic hosted listening parties for the soundtrack on October 24, 2008, and the album was released on November 4, 2008. Borders released an exclusive version of the soundtrack that features an acoustic version of "Decode." (So that's why a lot of Twilight" fans like their music)

The band released a live album named The Final Riot! on November 25, 2008. The album includes a bonus DVD with a full concert recorded in Chicago, as well as a behind the scenes documentary. As of the 9 of April 2009, The Final Riot! is certified gold in the United States.

And on March 9, Paramore will come to Manila for a one-night only concert. And you can watch it for FREE but needs to eat a lot of crab meat, corn soups and fish fillet salads first.

Here's a promo according to Mr. Ricky Lo of The Philippine Star: Every P5,000 worth of accumulated receipts in any of the Little Asia outlets (Tomas Morato, Quezon City; Promenade in Greenhills, San Juan City; and at The Venice McKinley Hill Fort, Taguig City) entitles you to two complimentary tickets to the Paramore concert on March 9 at the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Concert Grounds. The promo is good until March 9.

Ticket prices ranges from Php 550 to a whooping Php 10k... so it's up to you to decide if Eating at Little Asia for 5k will be a bargain with two FREE concert tix as a bonus.
